Importance as a Natural Protected Area:

The site acquired by LaNU is located in the “Kutschgeteich Moritzburg“ NPA. Intensive maintenance and management of the canal meadow will make a significant contribution to the preservation and development of the stock of orchids.

The population of western march orchids and heath spotted orchid should be stabilised and built back up on this extensively used wet grassland.

The Moritzburg canal meadows create a habitat for many species of animals and plants (for example nature gate, Siberian iris, hermit beetle and grass snake). Many of the plants and animals living there are Red List in Germany and Saxony. The wet meadows are a valuable habitat, particularly from a fauna point of view.

By acquiring the sites, the LaNU Nature Protection Fund has ensured the long term preservation of this area in the context of nature protection.

Conservation and Development:

The Moritzburg canal meadows are managed by the Dresden Naturschutzinstitut (Nature Protection Institute - NSI) and cut once a year.
