Importance as a Natural Protected Area:

The total area of orchard meadow is regarded as very valuable in terms of nature protection, due to their size and structure. Kirschberg is one part of the largest regional orchard meadows in the Zwickau region, stretching up to the slopes above the Pleissenau plains.

To guarantee the cohesion and upgrading of the orchard meadows long term, the areas were acquired by the Foundation for the Natural Protection Fund. Other individual adjoining sites between the plots then followed, to create a unified biotope.

By acquiring the sites, the LaNU Nature Protection Fund ensured their long term preservation and development in the context of nature protection.

Conservation and Development:

An agreement to carry out preservation measures has existed since 2013 in the from of the West Saxony Countryside Preservation Association. Above all, this includes carrying out the annual mowing. A new land management concept is being developed by the LaNU Nature Protection Fund for the future, which also includes care for wooded and grassland areas.

As a first step in March 2012, 40 young fruit trees (old, regional types from domestic stock) were planted to revitalise and develop the orchard meadows. The second stage should go ahead in Autumn 2012. The aim is to preserve and further develop the total area on the Forellenberg mountain as a biotope.
