Importance as a Natural Protected Area:

The area is striking because of the landscape structures found there. It has been recognised as an FFH region, and so has special European level protection status.

A string of ponds acts as a habitat for various species of amphibians and as a spawning ground. It is used by common, natterjack, green and spadefoot toads, as well and tree and green frogs. You may also encounter fire-bellied toads and crested newts.

This area of wetland is particularly valuable due to its swamp forest and riverside forest, natural flowing water and various spring areas. Potential users of this habitat include the Elbe river beaver, otters, swans, ducks and little ringed plovers. The rest and over-wintering options for water and marsh birds, and the value as a source of food and hunting for avifauna (bird life) are particulary worth mentioning.

By acquiring the sites, the LaNU Nature Protection Fund has ensured the long term preservation of this area in the context of nature protection.

Conservation and Development:

Due to high water levels in 2002 and the renewed risk of flooding, the Dam Authority of the Saxony Free State erected a controlled polder, which in total comprises an area of 1.436 hectares and a maximum water volume of 15 million m³.

The aim is to spread the flow of water and to keep down the water levels during major flooding events in the depression and in the polder.

The Wellaune area is also affected by flood protection schemes. A 815 m long flood protection wall is to be erected.
