Would you like to get involved in nature and environmental issues? Are you interested in important ecological and social topics, such as climate change, globalization or environmental degradation as a whole? Then you've come to the right place! Together, we want to find answers for important questions of our time and show you options for action and future prospects.

Diverse activities for diverse interests

The voluntary ecological year starts on September 1st and ends on August 31st of the following year. During this time, you can dip your toes into proper work life (40h week) and everything that entails. We offer you a variety of different assignment locations, which deal with the following main areas:

  • Technical environmental protection, environmental analysis
  • Practical nature conservation, animal care
  • Organic farming
  • Environmental education, nature education

Seminar weeks - more than just work

Participants of the voluntary ecological year meet for seminars five times a year. During these times, we provide you with the opportunity to deal with important ecological issues, deepen your knowledge and explore options for action. The great thing is that you are given the chance to plan and organize the seminar weeks independently.

Remuneration and benefits

  • EUR 320 per month
  • 27 days of annual leave
  • Full contributions for health care, pension, long-term care and unemployment insurance
  • The FÖJ ID card provides numerous discounts (theatre, museums, cinema, public transport)
  • Many training centres recognize the voluntary ecological year as an internship or pre-internship
  • At German universities, the voluntary ecological year can be counted as a waiting period

Application process

If you are between 16 and 27 years old, have completed full-time school (9 years) and are interested in participating in a voluntary ecological year, please submit the following application documents to us:

  • Completed application form (see downloads)
  • Complete tabular CV
  • Copy of your last school report
  • Copy of internship records

You can submit your application for the voluntary ecological year at any time. For ecological reasons, please refrain from using application folders, brochure covers and glossy paper. We are also happy to receive your application by email.
